The Star Trek voyager Writers - Director's Guide describes Kathryn Janeway as the embodiment of "all that is exemplary about Starfleet officers.  "These words imbue Kate Mulgrew's portrayal of voyager's intrepid captain.  An experienced actress with two series under her belt (Mrs. Columbo and Heartbeat).  Mulgrew is no stranger to rigors of episodic television.  Scores of guest-starring roles and several feature films (Remo Williams: The Adventures Begins, Throw mama from the train:  Please click on Bio on top for more information on Kate Mulgrew) pale in comparison to her place on Voyager's Bridge.  Disappointed with her initial audition.  Kate Mulgrew requested a second audition in Los Angeles.  She read once more for the role of voyager's Captain only hours before Genevieve Bujold signed for the same part.  Bujold's resignation after two days of filming forced studio heads to look for a new captain.  Mulgrew's passion and integrity distinguished her above her competitors and she landed the role.

Captain Kathryn Janeway command one of the newest and most advanced vessels in Starfleet, U.S.S Voyager.  Janeway enter Starfleet as a scientist but her leadership skills led her to command.  Although she is capable of great passion and empathy.  Janeway is tough in a crisis and doesn't tolerate any challenge to her authority.  Before assuming command of the U.S.S. Voyager, Janeway gained experience at various science and technical posts that eventually led to her service under Captain Paris as science officer aboard the U.S.S. Al-Batani during the Orias expedition.  While under that command, Janeway personified the well-held belief that Captain Paris only works with the "Best and the Brightest," a notion that predicated her turn as Voyager's Captain.  Kathryn Janeway has proven to be a valiant and worthy successor to the Starfleet captains that have preceded her in Star Trek history.

DID YOU KNOW? Star Trek Voyager producers changed Captain Janeway's first name several times before setting on Kathryn.  The original name was intended to be Elizabeth Janeway (named for an American feminist writer): later it was changed Catherine.  Genevieve Bujold preferred the name Nicole and finally.  Kate Mulgrew became Kathryn.

Janeway's love of gothic novels motivates her to spend much of her free time on the holodeck in a recreation of old England on Earth.  She is also an accomplished pool player and enjoys the game of tennis. Janeway once considered coffee to be an essential part of her lifestyle, but food replicators rationing aboard Voyager has forced her to modify her beverage choices.

Janeway father was a design engineer.  He had drowned under the Polar Ice Caps of Tau Ceti Prime some time around 2358 and Janeway was profoundly affected by his death.  Janeway's father allowed her to learn her own lessons and make her own mistakes; she respected him for never shielding her from the realities of life.
